The Exergen TemporalScanner™ Thermometer is a non-invasive system with advanced infrared technology providing maximum ease of use with quick, consistently accurate measurements. Advanced, patented technology measures temperatures with a gentle stroke across the forehead.

The thermometer is easy to use, with just a few simple steps: Simply depress and hold its large, soft button and lightly scan across the forehead. A red LED light and soft beep indicate a correct scan.

Nearly two billion temperatures are taken each year with the TemporalScanner™. It is used in thousands of hospitals, clinics and pediatricians' offices across the country, as well as in millions of homes. In addition to being the #1 preference of pediatricians in the United States, it is the #1 preference of nurses, and the #1 selling retail thermometer.

The TemporalScanner™ Thermometer is tested six times for accuracy during manufacture at Exergen's plant in Watertown, Massachusetts and comes with a one-year warranty. It runs on one 9-volt battery (included), and meets and exceeds all regulatory requirements, including FDA, ASTM, EC, and UL.

Created by Harvard-research scientist Dr. Francesco Pompei, the TemporalScanner™ has become one of the most efficient, non-invasive thermometer ever created. The Exergen TemporalScanner's performance is supported by more than 50 peer-reviewed published studies covering all ages from preterm infants to geriatrics and all care areas from hospitals to homes.

How It Works

The Exergen Smart Glow TemporalScanner™ thermometer accurately reads a temperature in two seconds and gauges body temperature by capturing the naturally emitted heat from skin over the temporal artery, which runs across the forehead and is directly connected to the heart via the carotid artery.

To use, simply slide the thermometer in a reasonably straight line across the forehead, midway between the eyebrows and the upper hairline.

The Exergen TemporalScanner™ Thermometer has four unique features to make taking your child's temperature simple:

Soft-Glow Display
Soft lighting for easy reading in any light. Perfect for checking the temperature of a sleeping infant (or adult) in a darkened room.

8 Temperature Memory
Automatically retain the last 8 temperature readings for instant recall to check on fever progression.

Silent Mode
Beeping sound indicating scanning can be turned off or on to avoid waking a sleeping child (or adult).

°F or °C Mode
Select most convenient temperature scale. Your TemporalScanner can be programmed to display the temperature in either °F or °C.

As with any thermometer, taking temperatures properly is critical to obtaining accurate temperatures, so please read all instructions carefully and thoroughly before using this product.

Updated Features Give Parents A Comforting, Accurate Option For Temperature Taking

A recent study published in MEDSURG Nursing, the official Journal of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, reported: “Based on the results of this study, temporal artery thermometers appear to be a reliable way to measure temperature noninvasively in hospitalized patients.”

A new study reveals pediatricians recommend Exergen temporal artery thermometers to their patients more often than any other thermometer

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does the TemporalScanner™ measure?
A: With a gentle stroke of the forehead it captures the naturally emitted heat from the skin over the temporal artery, taking 1,000 readings per second, selecting the most accurate. With its patented Arterial Heat Balance system, the TemporalScanner measures ambient temperatures, mathematically replaces the small temperature loss from cooling at the skin, and displays an accurate arterial temperature.
Q: What is arterial temperature?
A: Arterial temperature is the same temperature as the blood flowing from the heart. It is the best determinate of body temperature.
Q: Why is it more accurate than ear temperature?
A: A major reason ear thermometers are considered inaccurate by medical professionals is because the positioning of the probe in the ear canal is inconsistent, thus creating inconsistent readings and frequently missing fevers. The temporal artery thermometer scans the forehead area for the temporal artery and it is almost impossible to miss the artery during a scan. Furthermore, the TemporalScanner™ has been proven more accurate than ear thermometers by a Harvard Medical School study.
Q: Normally, how does arterial temperature compare to other methods of temperature?
A: Arterial temperature is the same temperature as the blood flowing from the heart. It is the best determinate of body temperature.
Q: Why am I getting inconsistent results?
A: The user should normally be getting stable results, or results within a few tenths of a degree of each other. However, a few things to know:
  • Multiple temperatures taken over the same area in rapid succession will ultimately cool the area causing differences.
  • If sweating, the temperature on the neck behind the ear lobe becomes the overriding temperature, and since this area is not quite as stable as the temporal artery, it can easily be cooled by the thermometer in taking multiple readings. Remember, the probe of thermometer will be at room temperature, and is about 30 degrees Fahrenheit (17 degrees Celsius) cooler than body temperature.
Q: I heard the thermometer is sensitive to ambient temperature, is it?
A: Yes, it is sensitive to ambient temperature, which is part of the reason it is so accurate.
Q: Where can I purchase a TemporalScanner?
A: They are available at Wal-Mart, Babies R’ Us,, Walgreens,, Toy’s R’ Us, and presently.

“Hot new thing in thermometers ... nearly silent and can be used in the dark, and the ailing child or adult need not be awake.”

- Mary MacVean

“Lets you take a temperature by gently sweeping it across a person’s forehead ... It’s quiet, easy to use, and noninvasive.”

- Kari Bodnarchuk

“The latest version of the Smart Glow TemporalScanner Thermometer makes the process of taking your child’s temperature as easy as a two-second swipe across his forehead. The quick scan results in temperature readings that are as accurate as any numbers produced by conventional thermometers.”

- Larry Urish

“The Smart Glow TemporalScanner is much better than this, obviously, and it can take a child’s temperature on the forehead ? which is even better than an in-ear thermometer.”

- Michael Machosky
